January 2020 brought an urgent desire to purge my clutter and Kon-Mari all aspects of my life. During my two week break, I feverishly collected clothing, books & craft materials for donation. As the spaces in my apartment grew less crowded, I unearthed relics from my past. I have always been a writer, scribbling into countless notebooks a blend of fiction and fantasy. I’d record my days and sprinkle in daydreams and mini stories as I saw fit.
While clearing out my books, I found a story that struck a chord with my childhood and helped shape my writing habits today. It was the book, “Amelia Writes Again” by Marissa Moss. For those unfamiliar, it is a series about a young girl named Amelia, who records her life in composition notebooks. The books gives the appearance you are reading her journal; it is in her handwriting complete with doodles and “spills” from soda and smudges of food.
For my nine year old self, this was, the shit. She had an older sister, spoke her mind (for better or worse), and recorded the struggles of adolescence. Combo this with the movie ‘Harriet the Spy’, and my love for composition books, writing and Converse was cemented.
Upon a quick review of the Wikipedia page, Marissa Moss published 34 Amelia books. 34?! The series follows Amelia from grade school through middle school. It tackles moving, school, relationships and everything in between. The most recent book was published in 2015, not too shabby. I’ve moved on from composition books to dotted Leuchttturm 1917s, or whatever quirky notebook in Target that catches my eye;). Although my reading has matured and I changed writing materials, this series will always hold place in my heart as the fire that sparked my creative outlet.
I leave you with a mission; dive into your closest and bookshelves, rediscover a childhood favorite. Spend an afternoon re-reading a book that spoke to you when the world was limitless and magical.
Happy reading!
